Shouldn't support renewals be cheaper?

I use Cloudmark Spamnet for Outlook to control the amount of SPAM I get.  It works really well.

My subscription is up as of today.  So I looked at it and decided not to automatically renew (which it gave me the option to do, for $39.95 a year).  That's great, it's a good service, but I wanted to look around and see what other options were out there for SPAM detection for Outlook.

Imagine my surprise when I went back to my CloudMark toolbar and chose 'Subscribe' (as in, I guess, a NEW subscription) and the price was $24.95.

What am I getting, by resubscribing, for the additional $15.00 a year?

Granted, $15 isn't a ton of money, but still....I would think it would be the other way around.....

Thoughts?

Upgrade to Vista? No, not at this point

My virtual friend Josh asks in a blog posting today whether or not you the reader will be upgrading to Vista.  Why or why not?

I'm not going to be upgrading to Vista at this point.

I've got a laptop and two desktops.  The laptop CAN run Vista (I was running RC1 for a couple days a while back) and the desktop probably could as well.

But for me, and my house, we'll run XP.  XP Home on the desktop and XP Pro on my laptop.

I'll probably put UBuntu on the second desktop.  But no Vista for me, unless I am able to somehow procur a new laptop.

Acer Ferrari anyone? :)

Windows Live Writer - Abandonedware?

I've been using Windows Live Writer for quite some time now on my two blogs.

I also follow the Windows Live Writer blog.  But there haven't been any updates to the blog since November.

Does anyone know, did this product get abandoned?  Are others still using it?

I really like it, and I don't really see any reason not to continue using it, even if it did get discontinued.

I've tried others (BlogJet, Blogger Web Interface), but I have come back to Windows Live Writer.

I just hope it didn't get shelved....

A phone that rings!

Thanks to a quick meeting with a local Seattle guy (he needed a phone that was unlocked for travel, I needed a SMT5600 that rang that worked on Cingular), I met Marius this afternoon, we did a swap-a-roo and I now have a phone that I really like, and you can hear it when it rings!

Thanks Marius!

Looking for a phone (Cingular)

I need a new phone.  The phone I have now works, but it is almost unusable because for whatever reason the ringer speaker has been blown out.

So, in order for me to tell the phone is ringing, I need to have the Bluetooth headset on or have the phone on vibrate sitting on a hard surface when I can hear it rattle.

Here's what I need, I'm looking for suggestions:

  • Bluetooth voice dialing
  • Sync contacts/addresses with Outlook (ActiveSync is fine)
  • Bar style (would prefer no flip phones if possible)
  • It must be able to Bluetooth voice dial while keyboard is locked
  • It would be nice (at some point) if I could enable internet capabilities for using Google Maps, etc at some point.
  • Polyphonic ringtones (not a necessity but it would be nice

I curently use a Audiovox SMT 5600.  It does all of the above except dial while locked with Bluetooth.  So, I guess getting another SMT5600 is a possibility.  But, I'm looking for alternatives.  A full QWERTY keyboard would be useful as well, but not absolutely necessary.

Suggestions?

Josh Bancroft? Kevin Tofel? ScobleRyan Block? (yeah right)

Shoot me an email or leave a comment please.

I bought an iPhone six months ago

Nope.  Not that one .  I bought an iPhone from Surplus Computers.  I use it with Skype.  You can buy one too, today.  Check it out .

It works really well. I use it with Skype and while it's not perfect (I'd love a wireless version), it works really well.

So you too can own an iPhone today and for a lot less than the Apple version too.

Josh Bancroft

My "virtual" friend (my wife says they aren't real friends unless I've met them in person) Josh Bancroft mentioned on his blog the other day that he had big job news, news that would affect his blog.

He said it was a good thing and that more details were forthcoming.

Then, nothing else.  So speculation abounds :)

My guess?  He's moving to Kansas , with Robert Scoble, and they are going to Video Blog tornadoes....  ScoBan Productions.

Just my guess.  We'll see.

What's good about the iPhone (and not good, IMO)

The iPhone recently annouced by Apple/Cingular/AT&T has a few things about it that make it an interesting "next phone" for a number of consumers.  Although I am a Cingular customer, and find the phone appealing I will not be purchasing this new phone, at least in iteration one.

Let's explore the good and the bad (from what we know now):

Good:

  • New interface, no stylus needed
  • Visual Voicemail (this is something EVERY phone should have)
  • Built in IPod functionality that stops the music when a call comes in
  • Bluetooth

Bad:

  • New interface, no stylus needed (this is both good and bad)
  • New 2 year contract with Cingular required + $500 up front cost
  • I already own an IPod.

I think this is a revolutionary device.  I think it will make the other carriers stand up and take notice, and hopefully some of the new things will make it into newer models of other phones.

But I use my iPod for more than just music.  I use it for video, and eight gig isn't going to cut it if I were to get this phone and get rid of my iPod.

Will Apple sell this phone?  Yes, by the truckload.  But there is a better phone out there, cheaper, which will work better for me, down the road.

I need Bluetooth voice dialing.  Have to have it.  If I don't have it, the phone won't work for me.  I need to be able to sync with Outlook (if only for contacts and Calendar).  It doesn't look from what I've read and heard that you'll be able to sync with Outlook, and who knows about Bluetooth voice dialing.  It's a rare feature these days.....

Only time will tell.  But Apple will sell quite a few of these new phones I believe.

Wired is better than wireless - most of the time

I've found that in my home network, wired connections are much better than wireless connections, most of the time.

My cable modem is not fast enough to overwhelm my wired connection, nor my wireless connection.

But moving data between machines, often large files, is so much easier than trying to do it via a wireless connection that can be iffy at best.

But when you have a home wired setup, one suggestion: use short cables.

Right now, I have one hundred foot cable that stretches from my office in the basement upstairs and I use that for connecting my laptop.  But the little RJ45 connector broke off on one side of the cable.

Had I actually wired it into a RJ45 outlet, I'd be replacing just a little cable, not a 100 foot cable.

Yes, I know I can just replace the RJ45 jack.  I have the jacks and I have a crimper tool.  I just haven't taken the time to learn how to do it.

Now is the time to learn I guess.  I can't make it work any worse than it does now. :)

My plan for the year is to wired up four different connections in four different parts of the house

- Kitchen for my wife's computer
- Living room for the TIVO
- Living room for my laptop
- One bedroom for my older kids so they can stream music from the
the collection that sits on a server in my office in the basement.

That's the plan at least. Gotta learn to cable first.  I've got a sixteen port switch I picked up for about $15 a couple years ago for just this little project.

Will the iPhone overshadow CES?

At the Apple Keynote this morning at MacWorld, Mr. Jobs announced a partnership with Cingular to bring out the iPhone in June.

Many of the tech sites now are all abuzz about the iPhone.

I'm sure this is what he intended, but I sure hope that it doesn't overshadow all the interesting, new exciting things that CES is bringing us.

I'm not an Apple fanboy.  But, like many other folks, I will be looking seriously at this phone and the reviews it gets when it comes out.  Not necessarily to buy one, but just to see how users and reviewers enjoy the new touch screen interface.

I will admit, to look at it, it looks like a fantastic phone.  Here's a pic:

GrandCentral Tip #1

As mentioned in my previous post, I've started using GrandCentral .

An interesting use of GrandCentral:

Let's say that you are a small company, based in San Franciso, but all of your employees don't work in San Francisco.  You have employees who work from all over the US.

I know, long distance doesn't cost much anymore.  But....

Set each of your employees up with a GrandCentral phone number in your local area code.  Then, you can call them for free.  The originating user pays only for the local call, not the long distance.

Not a perfect solution.  But it could save you some coin if you use it enough.

Grand Central - The art of keeping in touch

I recently was turned on to a new service called Grand Central .  I've long been a fan of Follow-Me phone services, although in the companies I've worked in, the phone systems have never been able to do exactly that, follow me wherever I went.

But now, with Grand Central , I can get the Follow-Me functionality that I desired.

Essentially, here is what the service does:

Let's say that you work in an office.  In this office, you have a phone.  But when you aren't in the office, people leave voicemail for you.

Let's say that you don't work in the office all the time.  Sometimes you work on the road with your mobile number.  Sometimes you work at home, at yet another number.

With Grand Central, you have one number.  You define your other numbers that you want Grand Central to try and contact you at, and when someone calls your Grand Central number, they say their name.  Grand Central then simultaneously calls all the numbers that you've defined in the Grand Central control panel to try to locate you.

So let's say that customer Bob is trying to get ahold of me.  He calls my Grand Central phone number.  I'm not in the office, I'm at lunch but have my mobile phone with me.  Grand Central rings my mobile phone, and my office phone simultaneously.  I answer, and am told that Bob is calling, do I wish to accept the call, or send it to voicemail.  If I accept the call, I answer the call as normal.  If I chose to ignore the call, Bob leaves a message for me on Grand Central voicemail, which is then sent to me via an email.

Where this really starts to get interesting is this:

You can define timeslots where, for example, from 8-5, your home phone number isn't rung when someone calls the Grand Central number.  You could also define it such that after 5pm, your mobile phone didn't ring.

It's a follow me service, but it's also a call screening service.  Very handy.  For now, it's free.  Check it out at www.grandcentral.com .

BCS Football on ITunes - For a price...

So, I've been watching the games this year from the BCS.  A few other games as well.

Went to bed last night too early, and missed the end of the Fiesta bowl, which apparently was worth staying up for.  Yeah Boise State!

Anyway, I had heard on the TV last night that the game would be available on ITunes today for download.  I thought "Great!  I'll just download it and watch the parts I missed from yesterday".

So I went to ITunes today to download it, thinking that since it was a major college game, it would be a free download.  Silly me.

$6.99 for the game.  It includes a bunch of other 'features', like every play of the game in about 20 minutes.  I didn't want all the extra features, I just wanted the game itself.

Oh well.  I should have TIVO'ed it and downloaded it via TivoToGo and put it on the IPod.  That's what I'll do for the Sugar Bowl tomorrow night. Go LSU!

ITunes versus Windows Media Player

I spent part of the day today ripping some of my CDs to listen to on my computer.  I usually use ITunes.  But, after having major difficulties with ITunes (it would lock my machine up after ripping one CD or it wouldn't even recognize that a CD was in the CD drive), I switched to using Windows Media Player v11.

It worked for every CD I inserted into the drive.  It never locked up my machine and did exactly what I needed it to do.

Unfortunately, I had to then import them into ITunes so that I could put the tunes onto my IPod. I really prefer ITunes, but the difficulties I've encountered ripping CDs make me wonder how stable it is for ripping large CD collections.....

Does anyone have any experience with ITunes issues like this?

2007 begins

Having stayed up for the first time in about six years to watch the fireworks, while the neighbor shoots off his arsenal.

Happy New Year everyone.
