Global Warming or Global Freezing?

I left work today (February 28th) in a torrential snowstorm.

Amazingly, we had about 2 inches when I left work. I got home and it wasn’t really snowing, just misting.

Now, at 9:58pm, we have about 2.5 inches of snow on the ground. And it still appears to be snowing, and we are supposed to have a ’snow event’ lasting until 10am tomorrow.

Can you say telecommute tomorrow? I knew you could. :-)

Excellent!

If you look at my previous entry, you’ll noticed that I found a way, thanks to the website for the Flash Slideshow maker I am using, to create a blog entry that shows a Flash slideshow. Very cool.

Essentially, post the SWF somewhere on your website. Go into the Offline editor (or online editor, I would imagine) of your choice, go into HTML mode and paste the following code:

<embed src="http://album.dvd-photo-slideshow.com/flash/flower.swf" quality="high" width="320" height="240" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>

You’ll want to replace http://album.dvd-photo-slideshow.com/flash/flower.swf with the URL to your flash slideshow. Major cool. You might need to play with the sizes as well....I just left it at what the site said to leave it at. Works great.

Embedding Flash into Blogger?

If anyone knows how I can embed a flash movie into Blogger, either via the Blogger website, or an offline editor, please leave me a comment.

I found some software that will take a bunch of JPG files and create a Flash slideshow. Pretty cool. I’d like to try embedding into an entry a slideshow and see if it will work.

Even if it only worked on the site itself, and not downloaded, that would be fine.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Why WebMail.US

My day job was getting between 1,000 and 1,500 SPAM emails a day, per person. Since we’ve moved to webmail.US, our statistics for the last month are as follows:

880,140 SPAM email blocked
445 viruses blocked
816,127 Directory Harvest Attacks blocked - Defined as "An attempt by a malicious person to find out the email addresses that exist within a domain."

Well worth the money we are paying.

Hosted Email

My day job company recently decided to host our email outside the company with an outside vendor.

After much deliberation and looking around, we decided on a company called Webmail.us .

It works SO VERY WELL.

They offer IMAP,POP3 and SMTP. The also offer webmail.

The spam problems that we had when we had hosted our email internally are virtually gone. The expense of hosting the email outside the company was VERY minimal.

I highly recommend them. Read the CEO’s blog here.

Also, the CTO has a blog here.

Highly recommended.

ITunes Song Length Limits?

I heard an old song on the radio tonight, and wondered if I could purchase it on ITunes. I don’t own the album, and really don’t have a lot of interest in the album, I just wanted this one song.

So I went to search for it on ITunes. It’s called "Do You Feel Like We Do (Live)" by Peter Frampton. It’s 13:54 long.

I can’t buy it on ITunes as a single song. I have to purchase the whole album.

Is this normal? Is this regular? It seems....wrong....

Anyone get this result when they search ITunes for the same (live version) of this song?

GrandCentral contributes to the conversation

As Josh found out as well as me, GrandCentral gets the conversation of the web.

I got a personal comment from the CEO of GrandCentral this evening, answering a question I had asked in a previous post.

That’s definitely the way to deal with questions as they come up about your service.

I applaud GrandCentral for their willingness to contribute to the conversation and I look forward to what comes next from their service.

Disclaimer: I don’t work for GrandCentral. I don’t get paid by GrandCentral. But I like their service a LOT. Although, if they are looking for people, I could be persuaded to work for them. :-)

Josh and GrandCentral

I have a new cell phone number, and a new phone » TinyScreenfuls.com

Josh Bancroft got a new cell phone, and he’s trying out Grand Central a service I’ve written about in the past.

You’ll like the service Josh. As to your question about mobile to mobile minutes on phone calls patched through on that service, I *think* that the calls are still considered mobile to mobile. I *think* :-)

Anyway, the only negative I’ve found about GrandCentral is that I can’t have two numbers. I currently have a number that calls both my mobile and my wife’s mobile number so that we can get it if one of us is busy.

I’d love to have a second number that I could use for my day job, where if you dial the number it rings both my mobile and my desk phone, so if I’m at lunch or whatever, my mobile would ring.

But when I tried to define a second number, it detected that my mobile number was already in use with another number.

Totally understandable. Might be nice if I could buy the use of a second number, since the first number is free. GrandCentral?

Telecommuting, how I miss it so....

I was reading through my feeds today and came upon this post from Charlie Wood on his blog:

When It Rains, It Pours

It reminds me of the good old days of telecommuting. But the bit about the part about the pants was WAY TOO MUCH INFORMATION Charlie! But I laughed anyway. :-)

How I miss telecommuting. How I miss it so....

The ten next blockbuster cars

CNNMoney via Fortune Magazine had a post about the ten next blockbuster cars which you can view here .

It’s an interesting list. The number one car on the list, the Chevy Volt, is a plug-in electric that will have a range of 40 miles on electricity and 640 miles when combined with it’s gasoline engine.

As you look farther on the list, they are exotics, or expensive fancy cars that normal people (read: you and me) aren’t going to be able to purchase.

It’s interesting however. They talk about a lot of cars, but except for the Volt, which is a plug in hybrid, they don’t talk about any other hybrid cars.

They don’t talk about the Tesla Roadster, that I’ve talked about previously.

They don’t talk about the Wright X1, which although a prototype, could revolutionize the plug-in automotive industry.

I’d love to see where they’ve at least considered the Tesla Roadster or some of the other more "exotic" electric cars that will be coming out in the future...

Nice features of this blog editor

One of the nicest features of Post2Blog is that if you are running iTunes and playing music on your machine, and you want to have the current song posted to your blog entry, there is a menu item you select, and it goes and checks your iTunes (if it is running) and reports back the currently playing song:

Current music: Charlie Daniels, "Stroker’s Theme"

I use iTunes, although I don’t normally have music playing on my machine. I have quite a lot of (legal) music in iTunes, synced with my iPod and I also have quite a few podcasts that I listen to, mostly on my commute. But this Current music feature is pretty neat.

Trying a new Offline Blog Editor

I found a new offline blog editor today, called Post2Blog and am trying it out for this blog post.

It gives me all the features of Microsoft Live Writer, as well as some other things that it doesn’t offer.

I’ll try it for now and see how it works.

Fast, interesting electric car prototype

Built on a Ariel Atom chassis, a former engineer from the company that is building the Tesla roadster, this is called the X1 from Wrightspeed.

They are currently seeking $8 million in Venture Capital financing to build something like this incredibly fast, incredibly energy efficient "car".

It plugs into an electrical outlet to charge.

It beat both a Ferrari and a Porsche in the quarter mile (and quite easily, from looking at the videos).

Check out the company website
